Routine basics

The beginner's guide to the Korean skincare routine

6 min read

Forget the '10 steps'

The famous 10-step routine is a myth born from a magazine article. Real K-beauty is about the right steps for your skin — usually 3 to 5. Start simple, add only when your skin asks for more.

The core four

Cleanse, hydrate (toner/essence), moisturize, protect (SPF). That's a complete routine. Serums, sheet masks, and exfoliants are optional layers you add based on your concerns.

Order matters: thinnest to thickest

Always apply from the lightest texture to the heaviest. Cleanser → toner → essence → serum → moisturizer → SPF (morning). This lets each layer absorb properly.

Morning vs. night

Morning routines end with sunscreen. Night routines skip SPF but can include treatment steps like retinol or exfoliating acids. Double cleansing (oil then water-based) is a nighttime staple.
